Chronicles of Natural Apostolic: Battling a Severely Dry Scalp

The initial issue…

For the past three weeks my scalp had been getting progressively drier and drier. I could not figure out was the problem was. My regimen had not changed. I was still using Terressentials, nourish spa conditioner and shea moisture deep conditioning masque.  However, I had a white residue forming on my scalp that slowly turned into white flakes. My scalp began to itch constantly and burn!

When the problem went from bad to worse…
On Friday I got home from work and noticed when I scratched my head in the front that a ton of flakes fell down. I mean, a lot! So I ran to the mirror and checked. On the left side, on my edges, I parted the hair with my fingers to see what was going on. My scalp was bright pink in a circle about the size of the bottom of a cup, and there were white flakes all around and on the spot. I also noticed that my hair was thinner on that side. I looked online and it looked like eczema or psoriasis… and then I thought, it could just be a rash. There are many things!

What did I do?
I thought, if this is a rash I want to treat it as one. So I spritzed the area with antiseptic spray (bactine) and applied 1 hyprocortisone cream. It immediately stopped itching and burning!

The next morning I applied selsun blue shampoo all over my scalp only using an applicator bottle. I did not want to get this on my hair, as dandruff shampoos are very strong and can be drying to the hair.

I let the shampoo sit for about 10 minutes before I rinsed it out. Beware this is potent stuff! Oh my goodness, my scalp felt amazing!! So invigorating and icy cool! After rinsing out the shampoo I co-washed my hair with nourish spa conditioner. Then I moisturized my scalp with my whipped shea butter mix.

How does it feel now?
It has been 3 days since I treated my scalp and it was not been itching or burning. Also, the pink circle is gone. The flakes are no more… and my scalp is no longer dry.

A dry scalp is something that many black women battle, but I will do anything I can to avoid letting my hair fall out, or having an itchy scalp. Thank God this treatment worked! I plan to re-do it at least once more to be sure that I have fully treated whatever the problem was.

Have you battled with a dry scalp before? What did you do to remedy the problem?
