Yes I am still going strong! I have been wearing buns for the exception of about 5 days. I want to share with you my progress.

The Beginning of the Bun Challenge

Expectations
I went into this challege in hopes that my hair will grow to waist length by June 2013. I had a specific goal in mind with a way to get there. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with my hair. Not in a vain, obsessive way. But my hair has become something that just is. Before it was like a major statement to say, I have natural hair. I don't use chemicals. I don't do this or that.. now its just become a part of who I am. "Hi my name is Kendra and I have beautiful, curly hair." Thats more like it now...

Dry scalp set backs
Along the way, I started having major issues with a dry scalp. The itching, the burning, the constant discomfort. It. was. horrible. I tried so many different things and nothing worked. For a while I was co-washing only but I had to revert back to shampoo because it was the only thing that would give me relief for a few days. Literally a few. Guess what the solution was? Apple cider vinegar rinse. Back to the basics. Isn't it funny how with natural hair you keep thinking other products are better than what you already have? I should have never left my old and trusty ACV rinse!

Product change that resulted in dry hair
I picked up organic root stimluator olive oil leave in conditioner because I used to use it and my hair loved it. Its an inexpensive product and I ran out of leave in so I needed some. Oh my, what that a mistake! After a week of use my hair felt like straw. I might as well have been a scarecrow! lol.. It took me a few weeks to realize, duh its the leave in!! So what did I do? I went back to what was working. Giovanni's Direct Leave in is my BFF.

Less is more
Less product. Less frillys with my styles. Less washing. Less time. Less manipulation. Less combing.Less fuss. Less frustration. Less everything except conditioner is more! I don't need a lot to make my hair happy. I used to spend a ridiculous amount of time on my hair. Too much money on products. I put way too much emphasis on it all. But with the simplicity of the bun challenge I have learned that all of that was not necessary! Less is more, my friend.

Learning my hair
I have learned some things that my hair likes and doesn't like. I have learned how to pay attention to what my hair needs. I have learned how to give it what it needs. I have learned how to take care of it without spending an arm and a leg. I have learned how to take care of it without taking hours and hours of time.

October 2012

So here's to two more months of the Bun Challenge. But to a lifetime of lessons learned, and a wonderful hair journey!!
